PARKS professionals from 10 countries across the world have been shown some of the best-loved green spaces Trafford has to offer, as part of a recent visit.

Delegates from the World Urban Parks European Congress were shown around Walkden Gardens in Sale by the Friends of Walkden Gardens and the Japanese Garden Society.

The tour also included a visit to John Leigh Park in Altrincham where the Friends of John Leigh Park hosted a crown green bowls taster session.

The international visitors, who came from countries including Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Israel and New Zealand were also given a demonstration of the world’s first solar powered defibrillator, also known as the ‘super bin’.

The piece of life-saving equipment was paid for by the Friends of John Leigh Park, who raised the money for it after a young man had a cardio arrest while playing tennis in their park.

Altrincham in Bloom volunteers met the tour on the Four Seasons walkway near the Cinema in Altrincham. This is just one of the many open spaces in Altrincham the volunteers have adopted and now maintain as part of their entry into the annual North West in Bloom competition.

The tour ended with a visit to Dunham Massey and a trip along the Bridgwater Canal, where the Mayor and Mayoress hosted afternoon tea and the delegates had the chance to talk to green space volunteers about their projects.

Anna Steidle, chairman of World Urban Parks European Committee, said: "During our visit to Trafford, I was delighted to experience the enormous impact that dedicated volunteers have had on enhancing the green spaces they are so passionate about. We will take this important learning back to our respective countries, where municipal parks are also suffering from a reduction in funding."

Cllr John Reilly, executive member for highways, parks and environmental services, said: “We are immensely proud of the fantastic green spaces and parks in our borough. With the help of Trafford’s amazing volunteers, these spaces are kept looking great for everyone to enjoy.”

The world Urban Parks European Congress was held in New Brighton from October 16 to 19, where the focus WAS ON sustainability, heritage and communities.
