MANCHESTER Grammar students from Trafford are celebrating another year of outstanding examination results.

Boys who study at the Manchester Grammar School (MGS) collected their results amid the news that MGS had once again earned outstanding grades, with a third of all results (36%) at the coveted A* level - a record for MGS.

Seventy-one per cent of all grades were A* or A, and 91 per cent of grades were A*, A or B.

Along with A-level and International A-level results, MGS pupils received Cambridge Pre-University examination results in a number of subjects.

The Pre-U is a challenging alternative to A-level, with its own grading system. The highest Pre-U grade, a Distinction One (D1), is a grade above A*, whilst a D2 is equivalent to an A*.

Across the Altrincham and Hale area, there were some exceptional individual performances.

Christian Race, 18, of Altrincham, performed excellently and was awarded 3A*s and 1A. He has an offer to study Biological Sciences at Pembroke College, Oxford.

Robert Jones, 18, and Ethan Jenkins, 18, both of Sale, were both awarded 3A*s and 1A each.

Josh Forshaw, 18, of Altrincham, achieved 2As and a Distinction One in his Cambridge Pre-U examinations, and will now study Law with French Law at Queen’s College, Oxford.

Robert Jones, 18, and Ethan Jenkins, 18, both of Sale, were both awarded 3A*s and 1A each.

David Dwek, 18, of Altrincham, was awarded 1A, a Distinction One and a Distinction Two, and both Gabriel Koslover, 18, of Bowden, and Matthew Webb, 18, of Altrincham, achieved two Distinction One grades, a brilliant performance, with Matthew achieving a further A* and Gabriel a further A.

Christian Race said: “I really had no idea what to expect, and I’m pleased I did so much better than I initially thought. I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter. I’ve really enjoyed my time at MGS, the teachers have been fantastically supportive. My parents are over the moon with my results but I’m still in shock to be honest.”

Matthew said: “I’ve got to say I’m feeling pretty shocked – I genuinely was not expecting this.

"I’m feeling tired from lack of sleep last night – I was certainly worrying about my results but I’m over the moon. I’m taking a gap year then I’ll be heading to Bristol to study Italian and Portuguese.

"I’ve been at MGS for nine years and I’ve loved every minute, it’s been amazing. My parents are really pleased with my results and I’m certainly going out to celebrate today – I can’t wait.”

Ethan added: “I’m feeling pretty chuffed. I checked UCAS this morning so I knew I had a place at Bristol but it’s been great to come into school to see everyone and collect my results.

"My family are over the moon – they know how hard I’ve worked for this. I’ve really enjoyed my time at MGS and can’t imagine going to any other school – the staff have been extremely helpful and still support us even though we’ve left. My long term goal is to be a doctor and I can’t wait to start my studies in September. But tonight I’m off out to celebrate.”

Other results from the school include exceptional individual performances; 19 pupils were awarded A* grades in all their subjects, six of these pupils achieved four A* grades, a tremendous achievement. 76 boys achieved a clean sweep of A* and A grades.

Fifty-four per cent of all Pre-U grades awarded to MGS pupils were D1 or D2, an outstanding performance.

Oxford and Cambridge offered places to 22 Manchester Grammar School pupils in 2017. Other leading universities to which MGS boys will be heading this autumn include Imperial, UCL, LSE, Durham, Warwick, York, KCL, Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds.

Twenty-seven pupils received university offers to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.

The school’s High Master, Dr Martin Boulton, said, "This year’s results are exceptional and I am absolutely delighted that the talent, hard work and dedication of our boys has been rewarded.

“For more than a third of all A-level grades to be A*s, and 91% of all grades at A*-B level, is fantastic, and once again places the Manchester Grammar School in a very select number of schools nationally.

"It is a source of great pride for everyone at the School to have seen these boys grow and mature into young men during their time with us. Our talented and dedicated staff aim to challenge our pupils intellectually and develop their academic passions, whatever they may be. It is wonderful to see them rewarded with excellent grades and moving on to study a diverse range of courses at leading universities.

"In congratulating them, I would also like to wish them every success as they take the next exciting steps of their academic journeys."
