A TRAFFORD school has emerged from a period of turmoil to celebrate a year of outstanding sporting success.

Bollin Primary School in Bowdon has notched up a a catalogue of achievements in local, regional and national sporting competitions, involving more than 80 pupils.

The success comes after a turbulent period for the 460-pupil school, which had been at the centre of a leadership row for some months, culminating in a parent protest and teacher strike in February.

This led to the council briefly closing the school due to the absence of key members of staff, before It was reopened with interim headteacher Kylie Spark at the helm.

Despite the problems, six Bollin teams have become Trafford Schools Sport Champions after competing in six tournaments for pop lacrosse, hockey, tri-golf and kwik cricket - winning against strong competition from other schools in the borough.

After victory in the Trafford Pop Lacrosse Tournament, the Bollin lacrosse team progressed through the Greater Manchester and North West Pop Lacrosse Play-offs to win a place in the national finals for the first time in Bollin School history.

In the nationals, they competed against 18 teams from across the UK and progressed impressively to the final play-offs, coming fifth and losing to the eventual runners-up.

Other successes by Bollin teams included being crowned Year 5/6 mixed Hockey League Trafford Champions; joint winners of the Girls’ Football Wellington Shield; while Year 3/4 and 5/6 were Greater Manchester Games Tri-Golf Champions.

On top of that the school represented the area in the Kwik Cricket County Finals; were winners of the Diamond Cricket Festival Year 3/4 and semi-finalists in a Manchester United Boys Football Tournament.

The school's interim headteacher, Kylie Spark, said: “Bollin has established a formidable reputation for sport over recent years and the achievements of the children this year in particular is absolutely outstanding.

"We are incredibly proud of the commitment and belief of the children and these results are the culmination of a clear vision for sport at the school and much hard work to achieve it.”
