TRAFFIC is being diverted around a strange dent – which looks to be the beginnings of a sinkhole – on a busy Urmston road.

Photos of a crater-like hole, which looks like it could cave in at any minute, have been circulating on social media.

Motorists have been scratching their heads as to what could have caused the bizarre dip, which appeared in the middle of Stretford Road earlier this week.

United Utilities have launched an investigation into the concave surface and lane restrictions have been put in place at the junction with Queens Road and Crofts Bank Road to allow repairs to be carried out.

A spokesperson for the One Trafford Partnership said: “An identified depression of the road surface on Stretford Road in Urmston has triggered investigatory works by United Utilities.

“Traffic management involving lane restrictions is now in place to allow for the investigation to take place at the junction with Queens Road/Crofts Bank Road.

“The lane restriction prevents the use of the dedicated right hand turning lane from Stretford Road onto Crofts Bank Road.

“However, vehicles are still able to turn right using the remaining lane available to traffic.

“United Utilities and the highway authority for Trafford are asking drivers to be patient and understanding whilst the investigation and repair works are underway.”
