WHEN Councillor Jonathan Coupe, 62, becomes Mayor of Trafford on May 24, it will be the second time his wife, Diane, has been Mayoress.

From 1989 – 90 she was Mayoress to Jonathan’s father, Allan Coupe.

“It’s the first time that a son has followed his father as Mayor,” said Jonathan Coupe.

“My father was a councillor all my life. At election times, I used to go round with him singing political songs over the loud speaker.”

In 1999, like his father, he became Councillor for Flixton ward.

As Deputy Mayor, he was grateful for Judith Lloyd’s help. “I am compering her last mayoral reception,” he said.

When executive member for the environment, Councillor Coupe introduced the four-bin collection round.

“I’ve been known as “Councillor Four Bins” ever since,” he joked.

He was executive member for Safe Strong Communities when the Olympics football games were held at Old Trafford.

“I was invited to every game and rubbed shoulders with people like Seb Coe,” he said.

He enjoyed even more talking to blind Brazilian Judo athletes when they practised at the George Carnall Centre. “It was a privilege to meet them.”

His passion for acting goes back to a miming play performed at Wellacre Secondary School. He then joined Urmston Musical Theatre and Stretford Children’s Theatre.

In 1969, he got a part in a TV series called Rogues Gallery set in Newgate Prison.

A long spell with the Canterbury Players followed and, in 2011 he became Noda North West Best Supporting Actor for his role in Strictly Murder.

He recently starred in HATS production of Noises Off. “It was one of the hardest things I have done,” he said.

Councillor Coupe is also president of Flixton Band and chairman of the Armed Forces Community Covenant Committee.

His mayoral charities will be the Alex Hulme Foundation and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

He is director and owner of The Kitchen Gallery in Timperley.
