COUNCIL chiefs have defended the need to carry out roadworks in Altrincham, after Messenger readers complained about continuing disruption in the town.

A major road running through the heart of Altrincham finally reopened this month – more than six months after works were originally due to finish.

Roadworks on Stamford New Road, which commenced in May 2016 and have been the cause of considerable disruption for the best part of a year, have been completed and the road re-opened on April 15.

But residents are still bemoaning the fact that other routes in the town are affected by workmen - days after Stamford New Road opened, motorists were delayed on nearby Ashley Road.

A reader said: "I can hardly say I have been surprised discovering another street in Altrincham taken over by 'engineers' and their roadworks.

"A few days after New Stamford Road was opened, the traffic was limited a hundred yards away from that street, on Ashley Road.

"And if you try to avoid that blockade and turn left to St John's Road you find it is impossible, as due to construction works in the neighbourhood, it is a one way road now."

A council spokesman said road works in Altrincham are part of plans to upgrade the town centre. The works on Ashley Road are being carried out by BT and the council tries to coordinate works with other agencies.

The spokesman said: "The council is conscious that there are a number of other roadworks underway in Altrincham town centre.

"While these are likely to cause short term inconvenience, the council does take every step to liaise with the statutory utility companies to coordinate works to minimise disruption wherever possible.

"It is also important to understand that the work is part of the continuing public and private investment in the town centre improvement work, long called for by local residents and business, and demonstrates the significant confidence there is in Altrincham."
