SEVERAL schools serving Trafford rank in the top performing schools in the country.

The performance of every school in the last summer’s GCSEs have been released by the department for education in its annual "league tables".

Schools are now judged against a new Progress 8 measure that looks at pupils' performance throughout secondary school and their results across eight GCSE qualifications.

Independent schools performed poorly in the tables, with 62 percent of them coming in the bottom third of schools for 5 or more grade A*- C including English and maths.

This is due to the fact that many independent school students sit IGCSEs, which are not officially recognised by the government.

Although the figures cannot be directly compared to last year’s figures due the way they are assessed, the Telegraph has compiled a list of the top 100 schools for GCSE and A-level results in the country.

London schools dominate the top rankings but schools closer to home also feature.
