AN elderly woman who suffered a head injury after falling getting on a tram is searching for the kind stranger who “helped save her life”.

Evelyn Foy, 73, had been out with her friends for the day in Sale on Monday December 19.

She had made her way to Metrolink’s Sale stop to get the tram back to her friend’s house in Altrincham when disaster struck.

The wheels of Evelyn’s shopping trolley got caught in the grooves of the disabled spot on the platform, sending her tumbling over and she smacked her head hard on the ground.

The fall caused a large gash, which cut through a major blood vessel in the back of Evelyn’s head.

Evelyn doesn’t remember much of what happened next but her friend informed her that a kind gentleman came rushing to her aid, taking off his coat to put around her and stemming the heavy bleeding.

Nineteen-year-old Joshua Hope, from Sale, called for an ambulance and the mystery man knelt by Evelyn’s side for an hour and a half.

“He stayed the whole time, putting pressure on my head. He used four kitchen rolls up trying to stop the bleeding,” said Evelyn.

“There was also a young lady who took off her shawl and covered my head. But we didn’t get any names. The man who helped me just went after the paramedics came.

“I would like to recognise and thank him very much. Without him I probably wouldn’t be here.”

Evelyn was taken to hospital, where doctors stitched up the wound. She had to stay in hospital for 24 hours for observation.

Although she is now back at her Wythenshawe home, she is still not able to go upstairs and continues to suffer from headaches as a result of the fall.

“I was down on my bloods and Christmas and New Year have been hard,” said Evelyn.

“It is only now I feel able to look for the man who helped me. Whoever he was, he knew what to do. And I owe him my life.”
