COULD the mystery loud noise that baffled residents in Greater Manchester be linked to a Welsh earthquake?

The Daily Post in Wales have reported that an earthquake struck North Wales just before 11pm last night – the exact same time that residents in Trafford, Salford and South Manchester heard a huge bang.

The magnitude 1.1 quake caused tremors and a loud rumble across Gwynedd, near Caernarfon.  Damage caused has not been reported.

According to the British Geological Survey, the quake’s epicentre was in Beddgelert but Daily Post readers heard what they described as a loud bang or a rumbling sound in Caernarfon, Blaenau Ffestiniog , Penrhyndeudraeth and Porthmadog .

Meanwhile in Greater Manchester, both police and the fire service failed to get to the bottom of the mystery bang.

Officers and firefighters rushed to various locations in Salford after receiving a number of calls from concerned residents but the source of the noise was not found.

There had been some speculation on social media that the bang was from a gas explosion or sonic boom.
