“What was that?” A mysterious loud bang that could be heard across Greater Manchester late last night has left residents scratching their heads.
People living in the Sale, Urmston, Carrington, Davyhulme, Salford and South Manchester area took to social media last night after hearing the noise at around 11pm on Sunday January 15.
Anyone just heard a loud explosion type bang in the Urmston area? Anyone know what it was? #TraffordLocals

Some said they could hear it as if it was off in the distance whilst others claimed it was deafening and shook their home.
Both police and the fire service were alerted by concerned residents and they scrambled to Salford, where the noise seemed to emanate from. But neither found the source.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 11.15pm on Sunday January 15, police were called to the Seedley area of Salford to reports of a loud bang.
“Following enquiries, officers did not find anything untoward. The fire service were also alerted.”
The fire service said that they were called to Monroe Close in Salford at around 11.13pm to investigate the noise.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service: “Crews did a check around Buille Hill Park, Media City and Salford Quays area but nothing was found.”
There was wide speculation of what could have caused the sound, with some baffled residents suggesting it could have been a ‘sonic boom’, and others claiming traffic works or a gas explosion more likely.
