BROOKLANDS MU Hockey Club's men got back to winning ways with an impressive 3-1 away win against Loughborough Students.

After a nervous opening period, Brooklands started to put passes together and open up the energetic university side.

But no clear-cut chances were created and when Tom Lush’s diving deflection went over the bar it looked like it would be a frustrating evening.

Loughborough did keep Brooklands honest with the dangerous Ed Horler looking in a goalscoring mood. His reverse stick shot forced a fine save from Rob Turner in the Brooklands goal.

It took until the 23rd minute for the deadlock to be broken.

After Ben van Woerkom was presented with a green card, Brooklands' David Flanagan and Aidan Khares caught the Loughborough defence napping with some telepathic forward play.

An expertly weighted pass from Khares allowed Flanagan to sneak in behind and produce a smart chip over Loughborough’s number one to hand the visitors the half-time advantage.

After the restart, centre-back Peter Flanagan threw an overhead to advancing right-half Oliver Clarke whose speedy hands saw him worm his way through the Loughborough defence and as he was about to unleash a mighty reverse-stick shot, he was denied by the whistle.

No advantage meant it was now Khares on the ball who calmly won a corner. It was charged down but fell kindly for David Flanagan who saw the keeper on the floor and calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.

Loughborough kept going and forced a corner. Turner had kept out every Horler corner that had come his way, however this time it was the turn of Elliot Smith. Turner saved, only for the ball to hit the post man’s leg and creep over the line.

The Loughborough goal brought a reaction and Brooklands began to play again.

The final minutes of the game started to heat up with both sides hunting for another goal.

Van Woerkom forced a corner after a push in the back outside the D and presented the Brooklands XI with a chance to seal the win.

A training ground routine by David Flanagan meant the ball was slapped towards goal with Khares and Woerkom waiting to tip the ball into the side netting.

Getting the final touch, Van Woerkom scored his first goal for the club with two minutes to go to seal the victory.
