MUMS go to great lengths to help their daughters in their time of need but Tracy Pool is head and shoulders above the rest.

Indiya Pool, 15, has been offered a chance to go on a four-week volunteering expedition in Tanzania next summer and must raise cash in order to take part.

The Urmston Grammar student and family managed to bank £1,000 through a variety of fundraisers, including a 100 lengths sponsored swim by nine-year-old sister Libbie and a game night at Juice Day Nursery, in Altrincham, where mum Tracy works.

But student Indiya was still far off her target of £4,000 – so mum stepped in with a hairy plan.

Tracy, 42, pledged to shave off her long locks to boost Indiya’s charity coffers.

“Once I had reached my minimum target and booked the date I became nervous and as the day drew closer, I became more nervous about what I would actually look like but I thought of why I was doing this,” said the mum-of-three.

Family and friends were doubtful when Tracy told them of her plans, with one even questioning if she was having a ‘mid-life crisis’.

But when the time came to have the buzzcut at Studio One Hair Design, in Davyhulme, on October 15, Tracy needn’t have worried.

“When it was finished and I looked in the mirror I was surprised that it actually looked ok and was not as bad as I was imagining,” said Tracy.

“Going outside for the first time was strange, feeling the wind on my head, but I have got used to that.”

And her family and friends have come around too.

“Everyone has been pleasantly surprised by how much it suits me,” said Tracy.

“I hope they are being truthful. My two youngest children keep stroking my head now, saying it’s so soft.”

Tracy raised £340 through the headshave but Indiya has a way to go. On Saturday November 26, an Abba Tribute night is being held at the Blue Raj in Urmston.

Tickets for the 7pm show cost £25, which includes a meal and entertainment.
