METROLINK has gone gold in celebration of the phenomenal successes of Team GB and ParalympicsGB at Rio 2016.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) today launched a special golden-wrapped tram as part of a day of celebrations, which will culminate in the Heroes Parade through the city.

The tram itself, which is number 91 in the fleet of 120 vehicles, was specially chosen in recognition of the total number of gold medals won by both Team GB and ParalympicsGB over the summer.

The teams both finished second in their respective medals table, obtaining a staggering 214 medals between them.

Team GB won 67 medals, making history, as the first ever nation to achieve more medals at an away Games having previously hosted, while ParalympicsGB smashed their medal target, securing success across 15 sports.

A time-lapse video has also been released that captures the intricate process of transforming the tram from its usual yellow and silver livery into a stunning golden tram.

Commenting on the special gold tram, TfGM’s Metrolink director, Peter Cushing, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Manchester has been chosen to lead the celebrations, particularly given the extensive talent that comes from and trains in the region.

“Our fantastic athletes once again provided countless memories over the summer and are an inspiration to millions of people, so I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve been able to honour and celebrate their success with this special golden tram.

“Tram 91 looks absolutely stunning in its golden livery and I hope the people of Greater Manchester enjoy it.

“We’d love to see as many pictures as possible from our passengers and the wider public and I’d encourage everyone to get involved using #TramGB to share their photographs.”

Police have plans in place and a dedicated team co-ordinating operational activity in the run up-to and during the parade.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police will be patrolling the city centre and working closely with the parade organisers and transport providers and other partners to ensure all of those taking part and who come to watch the parade, can do so in a safe environment.

Superintendent Martin Greenhalgh of Greater Manchester Police said: “We are very proud to be part of this world-class sporting event and it provides a wonderful opportunity for thousands of visitors to sample the cosmopolitan culture of Greater Manchester.

“There will be a high-profile policing presence across the city in the run up to and throughout the parade.

“We are extremely skilled and have vast experience in running major events, including sporting events and are confident that visitors, athletes and residents can enjoy a safe and friendly parade in Manchester.

“We are also working closely with other organisations including, Transport for Greater Manchester and Manchester City Council, as well as many other transport providers, to ensure that the parade is a success.

“There is likely to be some disruption caused to travel in and around the city centre over the course of the day and I would ask the public for their patience and support as the parade takes place and to allow additional time for travel as required.”
