RESIDENTS are being urged to be vigilant and to not fall prey to a Chinese inheritance scam operating in Trafford.

There have been several reports of people in the borough receiving letters from a Chinese ‘solicitor’, informing them that they have inherited a large amount of money from a distant relative who died in China.

The letters have been reported to the police and Trafford’s iCAN, a council-run service which helps residents stay a step ahead of rogue traders.

An iCAN alert states: “These promises are fake and will no doubt be followed up by requests for bank details. Scams cost UK residents £5-10 billion every year and come in many forms; letters, emails, phone calls or even personal callers. Scammers target the most vulnerable among us, so it's important that we share news about scams with friends, relatives and neighbours.”

Scams should be reported to actionfraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visit actionfraud.police.uk.
