A TIMPERLEY schoolgirl enjoyed an afternoon with a Trafford dignitary who was inspired by her selfless nature.

Eleven-year-old Alicia Wright received an unexpected invitation to the Mayor’s Parlour for a personal date with the Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Judith Lloyd.

The invitation followed Alicia’s epic challenge in June to walk blindfolded from Wembley Stadium to Old Trafford, covering a total of 180 miles.

The incredible fundraising feat saw her raise more than £12,000 for Henshaws, the charity which supports children living with sight loss, building their skills, confidence and helping look forward to a positive future.

Visually impaired herself, Alicia wanted to raise the money to give something back to the charity which has helped her so much.

Armed with her fundraising cheque, Alicia used the opportunity to present it to Mike Lorimer from Henshaws Trafford, in the Mayor’s presence.

Cllr Lloyd said she was delighted and honoured to be able to welcome Alicia and her family into the parlour.

“To see someone so young, selflessly challenge herself in such a huge way is truly inspirational,” she said.

“Alicia chose to take on something which was significant to her to not only raise money but also awareness of the fantastic work and support carried out by Henshaws.

“She is proof of just what can be achieved when someone sets their mind to succeed. She has done so much by undertaking this challenge, without complaining when things got tough and I would like to extend my personal congratulations and those of everyone living in the borough on such an outstanding achievement.”

Alicia’s campaign won the backing of comedian Jason Manford, who helped boost her fundraising total after sharing her inspirational story on social media – as well as making his own donation.

Alicia's mum, Lisa said: “My daughter has always been a very caring, conscientious person who is passionate about helping others and so we weren’t at all surprised when she told us that she wanted to help raise money for charity. It was Alicia who came up with the fundraising idea. I don’t think any of us realised just how tough it would be last time but it’s amazing the motivation that you generate when you know it’s for a great cause.”
