A WOMAN posing as an Environmental Health Officer carried out a fake inspection at a Trafford restaurant and threatened to close it down.

Police and Trafford Council are warning businesses to be on their guard, claiming the woman was an ‘imposter’.

The fraudster, who had come unannounced, declared the premises ‘unhygienic’ after conducting the ‘inspection’ and said she was going to shut the business as a result.

It is a criminal offence to impersonate an Environmental Health Officer or a Trading Standards Officer and business owners are encouraged to ask for ID.

A spokesperson said: “Trafford Council is committed to protecting local businesses and residents against people impersonating council or other officials. If anyone is unsure of the authenticity of any person approaching them, should make sure they ask for identification and if they are still unsure, don’t hesitate to contact the council direct.”

Trafford Council is encouraging residents to register for iCAN alerts, which are issued either as pre-recorded voicemails or emails.
