A BARBER shop is proving it is a cut above the rest, offering free haircuts to the homeless and jobseekers – and social media has fallen in love.

Skullfades Barber Shop, on Washway Road, Sale, posted a promotion with a difference to its Facebook page last night, which has been shared almost 800 times and attracted more than 1,200 likes in just 12 hours.

Owner Ged King, 30, from Sale, wrote: “If you are homeless and want to change your life we offer you all of our services completely free. If you are unemployed and have managed to get a job interview we will offer you our services completely free until you're back on your feet. We want to do a little bit to make our community a little better.”

Messenger Newspapers:

Speaking to the Messenger today, Ged, who has run the thriving business for just over two years, said the flood of positive reaction has been ‘brilliant’.

He said he was inspired to offer the service when he read about the shocking number of veterans left homeless after leaving the military.

The former Partington resident is an ex-army personnel, as is his fellow Skullfades barber Damo Tait, so he could empathise with their situation.

“I broke my heart to hear that, we can relate to and understand their struggles,” he said.

“It is said that most are only five pay cheques away from being homeless – that’s scary. It can happen to anyone.”

Ged has built up a good relationship with the homeless community in Sale and even offered a homeless man a job as a cleaner in his barbershop.

So when he was thinking about how he could do his bit, he roped in the help of colleagues Damo and Sam Varden to run the compassionate service – which extends to job seekers.

“I have been in the position of looking for work but having no money for a bus let alone a haircut,” he said.

“If someone is genuinely in a bad place, we are more than happy give them a tidy up for job interviews and help them out with products.”

Call in to Ged’s shop – where you can met resident dogs, Martha and Eric – at 19a Washway Road.
