PROMINENT Timperley watercolourist George Allen’s love for art could earn him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The George Allen Appreciation Society hopes to establish the late painter as most prolific English watercolour artist recorded in the 20th century, a record based on either the number of works painted or the number sold.

To help achieve this success, the group is asking that anyone who owns artwork by George or knows the whereabouts of any of his paintings to get in touch.

George was born in Warrington in 1910, but lived in Hale for most of his life and then in Bloomsbury Grove, Timperley, during his later years until his death, aged 82 in 1992.

He took inspiration for water colours and ink drawings from many Trafford landmarks, including Old Market Place and Bowdon Church.

A worldwide search for lost paintings by the artist was launched by the Messenger last year and unearthed a raft of original paintings.

Son Gordon Allen, who established the George Allen Appreciation Society, said: “We decided to see if we can establish a record because although I knew my father was a prolific artist, it was only after I started to trace people via the Messenger, social media and launching a website that I began to realise I had no idea as to the level of his output.”

Since starting the quest, Gordon has made contact with almost 300 people across the country, with some people owning up to seven paintings.

A fine art dealer also got in touch to say that, during the last 15 years of his life, George had supplied him with around 2,000 paintings which he sold to big name stores such as John Lewis and Harrods.

“I can safely say that I know of around 4,000 paintings but I estimate that the total amount could be double this,” added Gordon.

“What is also interesting is the fact that the majority of his paintings were actually sold. Our group would like to establish a record in the Guinness Book of Records to help us gain the true recognition he deserves.”
