SCHOOLS are being urged to enter the Speaker’s School Council Awards.

The advice comes from Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green.

The awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate school councils’ achievements in bringing about positive change in their school or community.

For the awards, schools are invited to submit a project that their school council has initiated and show this has made a difference to their school or community. Previous winners have ranged from Dementia Friends projects with the community, to encouraging recycling and saving energy in schools.

Open to every infant, primary and secondary school, sixth-form college, and SEN school in the UK, winning projects are chosen in four age categories (4-7, 8-11, 11-16, 17-19).

Every school that enters receives a web badge, and winners are invited to the Houses of Parliament for a prize giving ceremony hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons in his state apartments.

Entries can be submitted between February 22 and May 16 and schools should visit www.speakersschoolcouncil.org for information on how to enter the competition.

Ms Green said: “That’s why I’m encouraging all schools round here to take part in the Speaker’s School Council Awards so they can show off the great work done by Trafford’s school councils to a wider audience.”
