ART deco chic and Davyhulme don’t ordinarily go hand in hand – but one Manchester artist has found the perfect harmony.

Journalist-turned-artist Eric Jackson has used his expert knowledge of Manchester’s boroughs to create unique, tongue-in-cheek posters that wouldn’t look out of place on the French Riviera.

The printed designs have proved popular with Mancunians and the artist has just revealed his latest poster; Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme.

The 58-year-old, who runs a stall at Altrincham market two weekends a month, said: “OK, it's not the Bermuda Triangle, but it still has its own mythology and mysteries.

“Bordered by the Ship Canal and the River Mersey, Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme are virtually unknown to people from outside the area - the proverbial end of the line.

“But when outsiders do stray into that triangular patch, they are often pleasantly surprised by the leafy streets, fine houses and semi-rural oases, and the Urmston Bookshop is an absolute gem.

“There is just one elephant in the room, which people try to ignore but can't - the sewage works.”

Eric, a former arts editor at Manchester Evening News, was inspired by the resort posters he would pick up whilst holidaying in Europe.

But Eric wanted to put a more contemporary twist on the classic style.

“When is the last time you saw a stylish poster about the place you live,” he said. “I wanted the posters to be playful. Sometimes art takes itself too seriously and I just wanted to make people smile.”

A selection of Eric’s designs are also available as postcards and mugs.
