THE Christmas lights-switch on went down a storm in Altrincham at the weekend, with more than a thousand people turning out to join in the festivities.

On Saturday November 21, the town centre enjoyed its busiest day of the year, with a programme of fun-filled festive treats for all the family.

Before the climatic switch-on, Educated Risk, Blank Cheque, Jess Kemp, Broomwood Primary School and The Music Place Choir, took to the stage for some crowd-pleasing performances.

Hundreds of children took part in free lantern-making workshops and Altrincham FC mascot Rocky Robin and Frozen’s Elsa, Anna, Sven and Olaf also put in an appearance.

The lantern parade was led by Captain Christmas and his Merry Band, who guided the crowds down to Stamford Square for an upbeat show from Absolute Belters, Amanda Heywood and Little Belters.

CBBC presenter Katie Thistleton and Chris Johnson then took over for the highlight of the night and led the countdown to the big switch on.

After the town was lit up, presenter Craig Price was joined on stage by singer Scarlett Quigley for a finale song, Silent Night.

Michael Young, Executive Councillor for Economic Growth and Planning and Altrincham Forward Board member, said: “Saturday was a magical day in Altrincham and an excellent opening to this year’s Christmas programme in the town centre.

“It was wonderful to see so many happy faces and the town packed with visitors. With many more festive activities lined up for the coming weeks, we’re looking forward to a busy and successful Christmas in Altrincham.”
