ALTRINCHAM’S landmark post office building, completed in 1899 and boarded up since 2006, has been given a new lease of life.

On Saturday, August 1, it reopened as the Old Post Rooms, hosting vintage tea rooms and many small traders.

The Provost of Altrincham, Denise Laver, declared it open before presenting a certificate on behalf of the Court Leet.

The town crier, Peter Powell announced the news and , soprano Scarlett Quigley sang operatic arias in the iconic building.

Also performing at the opening were saxophonist Alison Diamond and singers Amanda Jane Heywood and Barry Jackson.

Cream teas and afternoon teas were served in china cups on tables embellished with candelabras by waiters and waitresses wearing black and white.

Managing director, Catherine Matthews, who rents spaces to the independent retailers, is running the tea rooms herself.

Those who want to buy their own vintage china can visit Storm in a Teacup.

The Pudding Club sells maternity wear and Pigtails, babywear. Ladies fashion is available from Madame Butterfly and Suka.

The Old Post Rooms is open from 9 – 6 on Mondays to Saturdays and 11 – 5 on Sundays.

There are also antiques, worldwide artefacts, jewellery and crystals as well as small items of furniture.
