A SOCIETY formed to document the paintings of an acclaimed Timperley watercolourist has created a new foundation to help upcoming Trafford artists find an audience.

The George Allen Foundation builds on the work of the George Allen Appreciation Society, which has spent the past year collecting information about the life and work of the prominent painter.

New Trafford artists can showcase their work during a special free exhibition at the Counselling and Family Centre in Altrincham on August 22 and 23.

George’s son, Gordon Allen, explained: “Knowing how much encouragement George tried to give artists who were not as successful as himself, we have decided to form the new organisation.

“The interest in the society has been fantastic and we have had several exhibitions which have been well attended, not only by people already familiar with his work but by a different generation of people who had not heard of him before.

“We have met quite a few artists and they have all been amazed when I tell them of the prolific sales my father achieved.

“Many said how few venues there are to exhibit these days and how hard it is to showcase and sell their work.

“The Foundation is built upon his own much admired work and aims to build bridges within the community through art by helping aspiring artists to make their work more widely available to the public.”

George Allen was born in Warrington in 1910, but lived in Hale for most of his life and then in Bloomsbury Grove, Timperley, during his later years until his death, aged 82 in 1992.

The foundation will offer support, help and publicity for new artists, as well as the opportunity to exhibit.
