A TIMPERLEY councillor who said she was "shocked" to even be nominated has won a Locality Public Sector Hero Award.

Cllr Laura Evans picked up the honour at a ceremony at the House of Lords for her work with blueSci at Broomwood Community Centre.

The organisation provides a mental health and wellbeing service and the awards celebrate public heroes, officers and elected public officials who have made a significant contribution to supporting a community organisation in the past year.

Cllr Evans said: “To say I was shocked when I heard I’d been nominated would be an understatement. I still can’t quite believe that blueSCI took the time to put my name forward.

"I believe in the importance of kindness, of taking the time to value people and the skills they have, of working together, sharing knowledge and helping them to seize opportunities and get support, friendship ,confidence, comfort and in doing that on a personal level I get a feeling of being of some value."

In the submission, blueSCI Director Alicia Clare highlighted the hugely important part Cllr Evans is playing in advocating and supporting people and praised her "heartfelt compassion."
