Walking along at twilight

STAFF at Trafford-based Regatta will be swapping their hiking boots for trainers next week, for a twilight walk in aid of the breast cancer prevention charity, the Genesis Appeal.

Workers from the Trafford Park outdoor clothing firm will join 1,000 other walkers for the Genesis Regatta 10km Twilight Walk.

“Regatta is proud to be joining the fight against breast cancer by sponsoring the walk and getting actively involved in ‘Pink Pinkie Week’.”

The Regatta team will be in the first group of walkers, alongside Genesis patron Ricky The Hitman' Hatton, when the walk gets underway on Sunday, May 6, beginning at Manchester city centre's Albert Square, from 7pm.

The event coincides with Genesis' Pink Pinkie Week' (April 30 to May 6) when women - and men - across the region will be demonstrating their support for Genesis by sporting one pink nail. This represents the charity's pledge to Make 1 in 10, none in 10'. Currently, one in 10 women in the UK will develop breast cancer.

Regatta's team of 12 will include the firm's MD Keith Black, from Hale. Keith, aged 48, is one of many men who has had his nail painted for the event.

Keith said: "Regatta is proud to be joining the fight against breast cancer by sponsoring the walk and getting actively involved in Pink Pinkie Week'."

Breast cancer has hit one of the Regatta team directly, Pat Crook, who handles consumer enquiries. Pat, 58, from Urmston, underwent a lumpectomy after discovering she had breast cancer in 1998. Pat has since received the all clear' but continues to see her specialist once a year for a full check up.

A fundraiser from Sale, Elizabeth Dearden, is another participant. Her sister, Carol, died of breast cancer three years ago, while three of her aunts also died of the disease.

She said: "The Genesis Regatta Walk will be a fantastic opportunity to show our support for the crucial research that Genesis is spearheading - and I'd urge people of all ages to join us on the walk, and in supporting Pink Pinkie Week."

The Genesis Appeal is the UK's only charity entirely dedicated to preventing breast cancer. Over the past 11 years, the appeal has raised £2 million to help fund the building of the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre. Currently being built on the site of Wythenshawe Hospital, this will be Europe's first ever, purpose built breast cancer prevention centre.

Registration places cost £10. To register, email your details to twilight@genesisuk.org
