STAFF and patients at Trafford General celebrated health, wellbeing and culture today with a variety of cultural and creative events.

The Staff Wellness Day was held to celebrate the hard work of staff and promote the benefits of culture and creativity to health.

Tai Chi classes, Chinese calligraphy demonstrations and a Japanese dance performance took place across the hospital’s wards and corridors for the enjoyment of staff and patients.

The event took place as part of the Culture Shots week, a collaboration between Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Museum and the Whitworth - part of the University of Manchester.

The hospital accommodates a number of creative activities for patients to help with their recovery and rehabilitation, including art classes for stroke patients supported by local artists and the introduction of activity boxes used during therapy sessions with patients with dementia.

The results of a photography competition were also announced on the day. The winners will have their work displayed on the corridors of the hospital.

The competition was won by Lucy Burscough. Second place was awarded to seven-year old Jake Thompson. Third place was awarded to Amanda Whitefoot who works at the hospital as a clinical educator.

Visitors were also treated to a steel drum performance from Year 6s at Rack House Primary School, Northern Moor.

Jane Grimshaw, head of nursing and one of the key organisers of the event on July 16, said: “The benefits of culture and relaxation to health can’t be disputed – this event has been a great way to celebrate the hard work of our teams here at Trafford General and to promote the health benefits of these activities to our patients. Today has been a great success."
