STRETFORD is set for a jobs and shopping boost thanks to discount supermarket Aldi.

Up to 30 new posts will be created when the German retailer opens its latest store in Stretford Mall, after agreeing to take over an empty unit.

Work will begin later this year on a large extension to create the new store, which is due to open next Spring.

s another new signing for the busy Stretford Mall, which recently saw TJ Hughes and Pure Gym open new stores. Owners of the shopping centre are also in talks with a major fashion chain and a national coffee shop operator to take over nearby units.

Stretford Mall Shopping Centre manager Gareth Wilkins said: “This is great news for the centre, for shoppers and the local economy with the creation of so many jobs.

“We have been working closely with the company to ensure that we can help them create the store that exactly meets their requirements. The work also provides the opportunity for a redevelopment of part of the centre, to make it more attractive to shoppers and retailers.

“We believe that the new, larger store will bring in more shoppers to the centre, so boosting our other established stores, such as Peacocks, Blue Inc, Boots and The Fragrance Shop.

“Aldi is a well respected company and brand that is increasingly popular with shoppers - it gives people yet another reason to head to Stretford Mall.

“In addition, we hope to soon announce two more store openings, both of which have been attracted by Aldi as an anchor store.”

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are pleased to announce that we have signed an agreement to deliver a store at Stretford Mall. We look forward to bringing our offer of high quality products at everyday low prices to the local area. We aim to open the store mid-way through 2016.”
