TRAFFORD residents looked to the skies on Saturday to witness a poignant moment in aviation history.
The last airworthy Vulcan flew over the borough as part of a farewell trip around Britain.
The Cold War era bomber performed several low level passes over Barton Airfield, near the Trafford Centre.
The delta-winged aircraft – the last airworthy example of Britain’s ‘V Force’ – then flew over Sale on its way to Woodford aerodrome near Stockport, where the Vulcans were designed and built by Avro.
Alongside the Valiant and Victor aircraft, Vulcans carried Britain’s nuclear deterrent before it transferred to Trident submarines.
Vulcan XH558 was restored to airworthy condition by the Vulcan to the Sky charity, but its age and high number of accumulated flying hours have seen partners withdraw technical support for the aircraft.
SALE photograher, Darren Marsden, captured the Vulcan from Crossfeild Bridge as it passed over Trafford around 3pm.
If you took any photos of the Vulcan on Saturday, email it to sam.editorial@messengergrp.co.uk or post it to Messenger, Alexander House, 94 Talbot Road, Stretford, M16 0PG.
