FINES for litter offences in Wilmslow raised just £50 for Cheshire East Council between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015.

The new figures contrast with borough fines totalling £1,600(59 fines) in Crewe, £375 in Macclesfield, £650 in Alsager and £200 in Nantwich. Meanwhile, litter offenders from outside the borough attracted fines of £525.

The fines for Wilmslow would suggest that fewer people are dropping litter, but only three weeks ago Sally Hoare of the Wilmslow Clean team, told the Guardian, her team had collected more than 600 bags of litter over the past 12 months

Ms Hoare who was responding to a letter by a reader who found Wilmslow tidy, adding: "Unfortunately, this is only the case because of a good number of volunteers work hard to keep it that way."

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), further revealed that over the same period a total number of 76 fines were issued, which should have brought in £9.625, but up to last month just over one third of the total, £3,400 had been collected from offenders.

Last May, Cheshire East figures for April 2013 to March 2014, showed that 25 fines had been handed out for littering across the whole borough.

In the six years since Cheshire East's formation the total number of people fined up to March 31, 2015, amounts to 259.
