DAVE Tutton of the Wilmslow based internet radio Beat City Network was contacted recently by musician David Bowker of Denver, Colorado, USA, who sent him a photograph of Wilmslow Secondary Modern School (Wycliffe Avenue) football team from 1962.

Founded in 1910, the school started life as Wilmslow Council School, before being renamed Wilmslow Modern School, later Wilmslow County Secondary School.

The school closed in 1978, when the girls moved to the new Thorngrove County High School and the infants to Fulshaw Primary School. The boys had moved to The Hough County Secondary School in 1963. The building was finally demolished in 1980 to make way for a housing estate.

The former envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Terry Waite, who attended the school for two years in the early 1950s, describes his memories of those days as "indelibly etched on his mind".

Recalling his footballing memories David Bowker (extreme left), remembers winning the schools’ trophy two years in a row and the picture shows Lady Robinson presenting the award to team captain Alan Lawrence.

Although he cant name all the players in the picture, the ones he does know are: (left to right) David Bowker, Barry Gouldsbrough, Johnny ?, Lady Robinson, Mick Mannion, Paul ?, Alan Lawrence, Graham Moult, John Cochran, Unknown, Unknown and David Lomas.

Dave Tutton said: "It would be great if any reader could fill in the blanks of the unknown team members."

If you can help out identifying the remaining players and/or if you have any memories of school days e-mail Peter Devine (peter.devine@newsquest.co.uk).
