THE Friends of Stretford Public Hall group is pressing ahead with its plans to restore a landmark Victorian building to its former glory.

The group members hope it will be a magnet for bargain hunters when it stages a Table Top Sale to help fund its ongoing refurbishment.

Organisers said visitors will be able to pick up items ranging from books and CDs to children's toys and games. A set of golf clubs and a guitar will also be on sale.

All the items have been donated by Trafford residents and Susan Ferguson, one of the Friends, said everyone within the group has been impressed by their generosity.

Sue said she and other members of the group have travelled to both ends of the borough, from Stretford and Urmston to Altrincham, to collect items for sale.

She's also grateful for the support they've received from the Tesco store in Stretford which has donated bottles for a tombola.

People who attend will also try everything from jams to jewellery which will be on sale and there will also be face painting to keep the children entertained.

Bargain hunting can be hungry and thirsty work and a cafe will serve a range of hot drinks and cake. All proceeds from the day, including proceeds from the cafe, will go towards the funding of a new alarm system for the building.

The Table Top Sale, which takes place at Stretford Public Hall on Chester Road on June 28 from noon to 4pm and is part of an ongoing fundraising campaign to turn the historic hall into an arts and community venue.
