THE Conservative Party is celebrating in Altrincham and Sale West after successfully defending the safe seat.

Graham Brady, who has held the seat since its creation in 1997, scooped 26,771 votes in the the general election. 

He was followed by James Wright (Labour) with 13,481, Jane Brophy (Liberal Democrats) with 4,235, Chris Frost (UK Independence Party) with 4,047 and Nick Robertson-Brown (Green Party) with 1,983.

Mr Brady MP said: "I certainly am profoundly grateful and deeply moved to be returned, once again, as the Member of Parliament for my hometown, Altrincham and Sale."

He added: "It's been a pleasure talking to the electorate on the doorstep over the last few weeks.

"I think it's been characterised by people being very supportive or being so nice they apologised that they weren't going to vote for me.

"It's been lovely."

The turnout in Altrincham and Sale West was 70.88%, with 50,687 votes cast. 

Labour's Mr Wright said: "I'm proud of Labour's campaign, both locally and nationally. 

"The campaign was fought with social justice at the core and we will continue to fight for the million people who are still going to foodbanks in this country and we'll continue to fight for a better, fairer country."

In Stretford and Urmston, Labour's Kate Green defended her seat with 24,601 votes followed by Lisa Cooke, Conservative, with 12,916.
