THE man dubbed Trafford's Frank Sinatra and his wife are being hailed as heroes after a schoolboy escaped serious injury while crossing the road in Davyhulme.

Wayne Devlin and his wife Val were walking down Broadway Road on Friday afternoon when the incident took place and he said the youngster, wearing a Wellacre Academy uniform, ran off a stationary bus.

Wayne said: "Val and I screamed at him to stop and the lad stopped dead in his tracks - just as he did a car that was taking over the bus at some speed flew past him, barely missing the lad. If we hadn't shouted at him to stop I have no doubt he would have been killed. With the speed of the passing car and him running out in front of it he wouldn't have stood a chance."

Wayne said the schoolboy was approximately 12 years of age and he added: "My wife Val made sure the boy was ok and and gave him a calm talking to about road safety and then we both waited with him till it was safe to cross and accompanied him safely across the road. He then ran off towards the park without saying a word. He must have been very shaken as were we.

"We are just glad he is okay and whoever his parents are they don't realise how close they came to losing their son. It's scary really. I'm glad we were there at that precise moment to stop something terrible from happening."
