WELL Green Primary School in Hale celebrates its 50th birthday this year - and it's calling on Messenger readers to play detective.

The school would like to find out the meaning of its original crest which it plans to re-introduce as part of its golden jubilee celebrations.

Acting headteacher Rosie Shaw said: "We've managed to find out a little bit about it, that it's wheat with a sword through it. Apparently the fields around here used to be wheat fields but we're not quite sure of any further background. Apparently it's also a symbol used throughout Cheshire - some cricket clubs use the same symbol."

The school plans to mark its special birthday with an Open Afternoon on June 11 at 1.30pm. The event will include live entertainment, tours of the school and refreshments.

It also plans a commemorative book capturing the changing face of Well Green Primary School. This will involve bringing together archive photographs and combining them with the memories of people with a connection to Well Green.
