THE Friends of John Leigh Park in Altrincham planted a tree in memory of a dedicated founding member of the group.

Martyn Phelps was chairman of the Friends of John Leigh Park from 2003 until his death three years ago.

His ashes were scattered around the roots of a black walnut tree sapling in recognition of his leading role in establishing the organisation.

Martyn helped spearhead the defence of the park against a planning application to place a privately owned, fenced and locked bowling green on the green space.

His leadership saw improvements to pets’ corner and other aspects of the park, and the award of Green Flag certification.

Friends colleague David Jolley said: “An architect by profession, Martyn had an intimate knowledge of the history and geology of the park, which he toured daily with his dogs, always ready with a friendly word and equipped to tidy away litter.”

Earlier in the day, children form Altrincham Church of England School gathered to learn about the park’s trees, and presented Martyn’s widow with a bouquet of flowers.

In addition to the black walnut, five liquidambar trees have been planted nearby. Using a grant from Trafford Housing Trust.
