ALTRINCHAM FC were pretty in pink at the weekend, after swapping their famous red and white stripes for a fetching new shade to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice.

Meanwhile, Halifax fans put their best foot forward for good causes - walking the 35 miles across the Pennines to The J. Davidson Stadium, where club officials were ready and waiting to reward their fundraising efforts.

Neither group knew of the other club’s plans until fans started discussing it on a website forum, but when Altrincham found out they were eager to help.

“We told them that we'll be happy to open up the showers for them and give them a bacon buttie when they get here!” said Altrincham chairman, Grahame Rowley.

“It just typifies the comradeship between non-league clubs.”

John Barker, a sales executive from Halifax, was among twelve fans who set off from the club’s home, The Shay, at 8.30pm, walking through the night to make it to Altrincham in time for kick off.

They then took part in a supporters’ match against Altrincham fans, before the Robins first eleven earned a hard-fought nil-all draw with Halifax.

Money raised by Halifax went to Macmillan Cancer Support and St Gemma's Hospice in memory of Debbie Charlton, the late FC Halifax Town commercial director.

Altrincham FC auctioned 16 pink kits worn during the game in honour of club stalwart Peter Warburton, with money going to St Ann's Hospice.

So far, 60 replica shirts have been sold as part of the fundraiser, with an estimated £2,000 raised.

While the limited edition shirts were eagerly snapped up by Alty fans, goalkeeping coach Ian Senior joked that there were still some items left available.

“One last auction,” he said. “The set of pink socks can be bought by the highest bidder. All 16 pairs worn. Any bids?”
