KATE Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, was delighted to welcome two students from Flixton Girls School to celebrate International Women’s Day in parliament.

The sixth form students, Bekky Myles-Cooper, 17, and Katie Holloway, aged 18, travelled down to London for a day of celebration, organised by the all party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Women in Parliament. All of 148 the female MPs in parliament were invited to ask a student to parliament to mark the event, designed to inspire young women to strive for success.

The students’ day began with an exciting tour of Number 10 Downing Street, followed by a discussion about International Women’s Day.

The girls had lunch with the MP, visited her Westminster office, took a tour around parliament and sat in a debate about violence against women and girls.

They rounded off the celebration at a special International Women’s Day reception in Mr Speaker’s State Apartments, where they had the chance to chat with other MPs and students.

Since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, this global event has seen thousands of events across the world to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women

Ms Green said, “It was great to welcome Bekky and Katie to Westminster and show them around.

“There are still far too few female MPs in parliament so we really need events like this to show young women what parliament is like and hopefully inspire the next generation of women MPs.

“I’d like to thank the APPG for Women in Parliament for organising the event and Bekky and Katie for being such a credit to their school and great representatives of Trafford in Westminster!”

Katie and Bekky said the day was "very enjoyable."
