A WORLDWIDE search for original paintings by a prominent Altrincham artist has turned up more than 30 new works.

A recent exhibition at Hale Library showcased the works of George Allen –a prominent Timperley watercolourist whose depictions of Trafford landmarks have been widely used on postcards of the area.

Son, Gordon Allen, is on a mission to document and collect his late father’s oeuvre and has now started work on a book compiling George’s paintings.

“The exhibition was a great success with more than 70 people specifically coming to see it,” said Gordon,

“One couple travelled up from London and quite a few visitors had information or owned artwork of my dad’s.

“In total we unearthed over 30 new pictures. We donated a limited edition print of one of his paintings to our nominated charity – the Counselling and Family Centre – which was raffled, raising £101.

“Within all the information and new pictures we have discovered we are making great progress towards being able to being able to publish some more prints and we have also been asked to give talks and displays to various groups and civic societies.

“We are also now starting work on a book whichever we hope to publish later this year.”

George Allen was born in Warrington in 1910, but lived in Hale for most of his life and then in Bloomsbury Grove, Timperley, during his later years until his death, aged 82 in 1992.

George took inspiration for water colours and ink drawings from many Trafford landmarks, including Old Market Place and Bowdon Church.

Some of George’s paintings are believed to have found their way to America, while a treasure trove of original George Allens was recently discovered in Bolton, in the possession of a well-known art dealer specialising in works by LS Lowry friend and contemporary, Helen Bradley.
