URMSTON Choral Society will be performing Handel’s Messiah for the first of its 2015 concerts.

Written in 1741 by, the oratorio was composed as a thought-provoking work for Easter and Lent but later became a Christmas-time tradition.

The choir will be joined by a small orchestra made up of local musicians and the soloists will be Margo Campbell (soprano), Margaret McDonald (contralto), Nicholas Buxton (tenor) and Maurice Rushby (bass).

Musical Director, Julie Parker said: “This oratorio is one of the most popular pieces in our musical repertoire and is loved by the Choir and audiences alike. Even if people are not religious, it has a great appeal for the beauty of its composition and wonderful harmonies, with the Hallelujah Chorus being the most well-loved.”

The first of the concerts will be held at St. Monica’s Church in Irlam Road, Flixton, on April 15 and repeated at St. Werburgh’s Church,Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, on April 18, both concerts starting at 7pm.

Tickets cost £7, £6 (concessions) and £2 (students/children) and can be purchased from Maxine Summers on 0161 748 0903.
