A DAVYHULME sports coach is helping Bury's boxing world champion Scott Quigg get back fitter than ever.

Ric Moylan, of Broadway, is working hard with the reigning WBA super bantamweight king as he recovers from a hand injury picked up in his last fight against Hidenori Otake in November.

And the man who has previously worked with the likes of Ricky Hatton, Frankie Gavin, Tony Bellew and Anthony Crolla believes Quigg will return stronger than ever this year.

Moylan works in tandem with Quigg's trainer Joe Gallagher, focusing on strength, conditioning and nutritional work.

And he says the 26-year-old is well on the road to recovery and could be back in the ring in May or June.

Moylan told SUM: "The injury was a setback for Scott.

"Everyone knows his punching power and it saw him split two tendons in the middle and index fingers of his right-hand in the ninth round of his last fight.

"His recovery has gone really well and everyone knows he wants the big fights this year.

"He is due to start light punching so I think he could back in May or June."

Moylan has been working with Quigg for four years after initially meeting him when he was under the wing of Hatton's team.

Originally from Old Trafford, the 36-year-old has been involved in training since achieving A-levels in PE and psychology at what was then South Trafford College and then a masters degree in Sport Science.

And after being interested in football and martial arts as a youngster, he knows exactly how hard training needs to be for athletes like Quigg.

Moylan added: "I have always worked with athletes and really enjoy it.

"I was a personal trainer for 10 years as well.

"That was where I met Anthony Crolla (Quigg's stable mate at Gallagher's Gym) and it went on from there to work with a lot of other boxers.

"I also train Liam Brody who is one of our rising tennis stars – already being in the top 200.

"It is something I really enjoy and hopefully it helps people like Scott on their way to reaching the very top."

And he is happy to still be part of his set-up as he progresses towards bigger and better fights.

He added: "Scott deserves all the success he gets because of his commitment and attention to detail.

"Joe Gallagher is a fantastic trainer and he focuses on the boxing side of things.

"It is my job to look after conditioning and sports science and Scott embraces that as well as the traditional boxing training."
