SIR Alex Ferguson encouraged youngsters to follow the lead of one his famous fledglings and get active at Altrincham FC’s new community hall today.

The legendary former Manchester United manager unveiled a commemorative plaque, officially opening the club’s new £750,000 facility this morning, Monday, February 9.

Ferguson, who regularly attended Moss Lane when the Red Devils used the ground for their reserve team games, stressed the importance of getting young people outdoors.

“I really congratulate you. It’s a fantastic facility and I hope it’s used well.

“It’s interesting you have a yoga class. At Utd, when Ryan Giggs started doing yoga it was amazing. He had no injuries.

“He was always out playing until he was 41 years of age. So if anyone wants to start yoga classes – get in here!”

He added: “I’ve always believed in young people through my experiences at Utd of giving young people an opportunity.

“It’s amazing how they can express themselves and develop themselves.

“In my day we could play in the streets. You can’t do that now. You need facilities; 3G pitches.

“This project is giving young people an opportunity to get out the house. Instead of watching television and playing video games, get in here and get active.”
