FORMER England cricket captain Graham Gooch will be the guest speaker at Urmston Cricket Club's annual dinner next month.

Right handed batsman Gooch who played in 118 tests and 125 one day internationals between 1975 and 1997, is the leading run scorer with 8,900, and a top innings score of 333.

At county level an player and captain of Essex, between 1973 and 2000, and excluding one day games, he played in 581 matches for his team and scored 44,846 runs.

He was also named as Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1980, Indian's cricket's Cricketer of the Year in 1988 and Professional Cricketers' Association Player of the Year in 1990. He was awarded an OBE in 1992 for services to the sport.

Urmston Cricket Club chairman Rob Arnold said: "It's quite a coup to get Graham down to the club, because in the past we have had the likes of Rob Smith, Angus Fraser and Geoff Miller but having the former England captain who is still its leading runs scorer is fantastic."

The dinner will be held on Friday, March 20, at 7pm at the Moorside Road club.

Tickets are priced at £30 for adults and £25 for under-18s and students.
