POLICE in Trafford are continuing efforts to reduce burglary as part of an anti-theft property marking initiative.

Residents in targeted areas in Timperley have been receiving property marking kits over the past couple of months.

The kits contain an anti-theft forensic liquid that can be painted on property and leaves an indelible mark which glows yellow under UV light. Anything marked with it can be linked back to its owner if stolen.

Police officers and PCSOs are visiting homes in Timperley, and also areas of Salford, and using the system to mark property which will include valuable gifts residents have received over the Christmas period.

Letters have also been delivered to known burglary offenders to warn them that the forensic liquid project is live in these areas and to warn them that the police are on the lookout.

As well as helping to track down stolen goods, the liquid can also be used as a spray system to mark the skin and clothing of offenders in order to link them to a specific crime.

Superintendent Mark Kenny said: “We want this to send out a strong message to would-be offenders that we not only have officers on the street tackling crime but also that we will use a number of different tactics to bring offenders to justice.”

Police are also offering simple security tips to help protect homes against thieves.
