If you’re thinking of proposing to your other half on Valentine’s Day, why not follow in the footsteps of some of your favourite Corrie characters and pop the question on the cobbles of the former Coronation Street set?

To celebrate this special day, Coronation Street The Tour is encouraging visitors to make a declaration of love at the attraction. All couples who get engaged at The Tour on Valentine’s Day will receive a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates to celebrate.

Anyone who is unlucky enough in love to receive an answer of “no” will receive a tub of ice cream to help cheer them up.

There has already been several proposals since The Tour opened in April last year with fans creating their own drama and getting down on bended knee, popular spots to propose include inside the Rovers Return set where a camera is set up to catch the big moment and out on the famous cobbles.

Some notable Coronation Street proposals include:

• The very first proposal took place at Number 13 Coronation Street when Joe Makinson popped the question to Christine Hardman – she accepted but changed her mind a month later.

• Following several years of an on/off romance, Derek Wilton proposed to Mavis Riley through the letterbox of the Kabin door in 1988, she said yes!

• In 2001 Steve McDonald proposed to Karen Phillips in the Rovers Return for a bet. Janice Battersby had bet Karen that she could not get Steve to propose to her.

• In 2009 Jason Grimshaw asked the question to Becky Granger on the Street, he was dressed in the white sailor outfit Richard Gere wears in an Officer and a Gentleman. Becky accepted the proposal but later left Jason for Steve who had also proposed.

• Michael Rodwell proposed to Gail McIntyre outside of her home recently, she didn’t know what to say and so Michael fled the scene. Gail later popped the question to him in Nick’s Bistro, he accepted and then collapsed and was rushed to hospital!

Australian couple Keith Monks and Charlie Acton started the trend last July after Keith surprised his partner during her tour. When the doors to Nick’s Bistro opened Charlie got more than she bargained for as Keith was on bended knee on the cobbles holding a ring, a banner was held up behind him asking the question, “will you marry me?”

Coronation Street The Tour general manager, Andy Begg said: “Coronation Street is a big part of millions of people’s lives and so it makes sense that they would like to carry out an important life event here by proposing to their loved ones on the old Corrie cobbles.

"As it’s Valentine’s Day we wanted to make it that little bit more special by gifting the newly engaged couples with champagne and chocolates.

“We understand that not everyone who is asked the big question says “yes”, and so as a small gesture from us we will also be giving the one who has just been turned down a tub of ice cream to help cheer them up.”

As well as getting engaged at The Tour couples can also tie the knot inside the Rovers Return. Tour operator Continuum Attractions applied for a licence following demand from fans. They are no strangers to hosting weddings in unique venues with other attractions Spinnaker Tower and Kent Life also holding a licence.
