A planning application has been submitted for a new cycle hub at Sale’s Metrolink stop.

The proposals have been developed by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to encourage people to cycle to work by providing secure cycle parking facilities.

If approved by Trafford Council, Sale’s new hub would be housed in the old train station waiting room building at the tram stop, with up to 50 cycle parking spaces alongside lockers for storing cycle helmets and other cycling accessories.

The hub would join a growing network across Greater Manchester, including Manchester’s large regional centre cycle hub at City Tower, and district hubs open in Bury, Ashton-under-Lyne and Rochdale.

Councillor Chris Paul, said: “This is a great location for a new cycle hub – right next to the tram stop in the town centre.

“If these proposals are approved, this hub would give people a safe and secure place to leave their bike and is in a great location for cyclists to continue their journey by tram or bus.

“The cycle hubs are just part of a much wider investment in cycling that we hope will encourage more people to consider cycling as part of their daily commute, leaving cars at home, saving money and the environment.

“Thousands of the car journeys made on our roads every year are just a mile or two, some just a few hundred metres, and many could be made by bike. Cycle hubs like this can help reduce congestion and help people lead healthier, more active lifestyles.”

Membership of the existing district cycle hubs costs £10 per year.

Hub members are given secure smartcard access to open an automatic door, with CCTV coverage providing extra security.

Around £45million is being invested in improvements to cycle routes and facilities across Greater Manchester, alongside a wide-ranging programme of information, education and training.
