HUNDREDS of people are set to flock to Manchester Cathedral for the perfect festive celebration.

Each year, Talbot Road based Henshaws Society for Blind People, organises a Carols by Candlelight concert, and this year’s big night is next Wednesday (December 10), starting at 7pm.

Guests can enjoy a glass of mulled wine and listen to performances from soprano singer Denise Leigh, who topped the bill at the London 2012 Paralympic Games opening ceremony, and her husband Stefan Andrusyschyn – an accomplished piano and accordion player.

Denise was born with retinitis pigmentosa, an eye condition which causes blindness, but that has not stopped her from pursuing a career as a professional singer.

Also performing is talented singer Jess Bennett, a Henshaws service user and volunteer, who has held fundraising concerts for the charity in the past.

Girls from Loreto Preparatory School in Altrincham will also put on a short nativity presentation.

Backing the event is visually impaired competitive swimmer Hannah Russell, who won silver and bronze medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The 18 year old, who trains at Manchester Aquatics Centre, and is a Henshaws ambassador, said: “I am really excited for this year’s Carols by Candlelight evening.

“It is the perfect way to start the countdown to Christmas, while coming together to help such a worthwhile charity.”

More than 400 people attended last year’s event, which raised £6,500 for the charity to spend on helping people affected by blindness and disabilities.

Tickets cost £12 for adults, £8 for over 65s, under 16s and students, and £30 for a family ticket for two adults and two children. Tickets can now be bought via www.tinyurl.com/henshawscarols
