LABOUR politicians have voiced their fears over proposed cuts to schools crossing patrols across Stretford and Urmston.

The constituency MP, Kate Green, has labelled the proposals by Trafford Council as 'disgraceful, if they go ahead with the plan to slash up to one third of patrols.

The Tory led council is proposing to cut 31 school crossing patrols in Trafford, 23 of which are located in Ms Green's constituency in the north part of the borough.

The schools affected include: St Hilda’s; Seymour Park Primary; St Matthew’s; Moss Park Infants; St Ann’s RC Primary; Victoria Park Infants; Victoria Park Juniors; Barton Clough; King’s Road Primary; St Hugh of Lincoln; Gorse Hill Primary; Flixton Juniors; Kingsway; Partington Primary; Broadoak; Flixton Girls; Lostock College; Stretford High; Stretford Grammar; and St Anthony’s

Ms Green said: “It’s disgraceful that Trafford Council is taking risks with our children’s safety and I’ve been contacted by many parents and headteachers who are deeply worried about these cuts.

“I’m especially angry that the majority of the crossings that are being cut are on some of the busiest roads in the borough, including in Stretford and Old Trafford.

“The Council needs to listen to the concerns and anger of parents and teachers and come up with a plan that puts safety first.”

Last week, Ms Green was joined by Urmston councillor Catherine Hynes outside Flixton Junior School, where a ten year old girl was hit by a car last month.

Cllr Hynes added: “As a councillor and the parent of two children who attend Flixton Junior School, I share the very real worry of parents regarding the safety of children travelling to and from school.

“I am contacted regularly by parents who have seen children involved in "near misses" close to school and as our roads are becoming busier and more dangerous."
