AN iconic comedy club initially started in Chorlton by a man from Sale is celebrating 10 years of making Trafford laugh at the Waterside Arts Centre.

The Best of Buzz Comedy helped the likes of Alan Carr, Sarah Millican and Jason Manford and was founded by John Marshall, who compered and performed under his stage name, Agraman.

Alan Carr, now host of Chatty Man on Channel 4 said: "Agraman was instrumental in getting my career up and running. Without his faith in me I would never have improved as quickly as I did."

The original Buzz club, set up in 1989, now closed, was based above the Southern Hotel in Chorlton and the list of performers to cut their teeth at that fabulous venue include Steve Coogan, Eddie Izzard and Ross Noble.

People from my parents' generation often wax lyrical about the 60s and the music it produced. For me, the 1980s was the golden age of stand up comedy.

* The next Best of Buzz Comedy event takes place at the WAC on December 6 at 8pm, with a programme that includes Brad Taste. These gigs are over 18s only and tickets are available from 0161 912 5616 or watersideartscentre.co.uk.

It's 25 years since the Buzz was born and I have many happy memories of the original night. Would you like to share yours? Write to Rick Bowen, Messenger, Alexander House, 94-6 Talbot Road, Old Trafford, M16 0PG or write to rbowen@nqnw.co.uk.
