COUNCILLOR Andrew Western will become the Labour Group’s new leader on Trafford Council, with Cllr Catherine Hynes named as the new deputy leader.

It follows the vacation of the role by Cllr Dave Acton, who will remain as councillor for the Gorse Hill ward, chairman of the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority and member of the general assembly of the Local Government Association.

Cllr Acton led the Labour Group on Trafford Council for 17 years. Seven of those years were in leadership of the council, with another five representing years as deputy leader.

At a meeting of full council last week, Clr Acton said: “I have done a good stint and I think that it is time for somebody else to take the role on.”

He thanked all members and officers for their ‘good will’ and support during his tenure.

Council leader, Sean Anstee thanked Cllr Acton on behalf of the council.

On Cllr Dave Acton standing down as the Leader of the Labour Group, Stretford and Urmston MP, Kate Green, said: “I’m really sorry that Dave is standing down as leader. He has been a huge influence in Trafford, committed to improving the lives of residents, and also a great friend of mine.

“I’m glad that he will continue as a trusted colleague on the council and I welcome his ongoing friendship, support and advice.”

New leader, Andrew Western, said: “I'm obviously delighted to have been elected Leader by my colleagues. I'm incredibly proud to follow David Acton and would like to thank him for all his work as leader over the past 17 years.

"I look forward to working with David and all of my Labour Group Colleagues over the coming months. It's a crucial time; we have to hold the Tories to account for the horrific budget cuts they have planned for next year.”
