AN animal expert has issued tips on keeping dogs and cats safe and calm during festive season

According to the RSPCA, it’s estimated that 45 per cent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks.

To help cats and dogs remain calm this Christmas, animal expert Simon Bandy, has put together some top tips for pet owners:

Stress relieving walks: For anxious dogs, going for a long walk during the day can help to alleviate extra energy, helping to calm them down and reduce hyperactivity and excitability. If your dog is mentally and physically tired, it will most likely feel relaxed and sleepy after a long walk, which can help to reduce feelings of stress when loud noises occur.

Act normal: Do not reassure pets if they are showing distress as this reinforces the animal that there is something to worry about; if severe signs of distress are shown, seek veterinary advice.

Stay indoors: Make sure your pet is kept inside if you know fireworks or a loud party will be happening that night and if possible stay at home with them. Act calmly, and allow them to have space to move around.

Make a den: Animals naturally hide when scared, so make a ‘den’ in a quiet enclosed area with lots of dark coloured blankets for them to snuggle into. Provide treats in the den to ensure your pet associates it with good things.

Keep the human food away: It can be tempting to treat your dog or cat with leftovers from Christmas dinner. Whilst meat may be ok, make sure it is fully de-boned. Also, never give your pets chocolate.
